PS2 Emulator for Windows: The Complete PCSX2 Guide

AetherSX2 never shipped on Windows — and it doesn't need to. PCSX2 is the mature, open-source PS2 emulator for desktop, running over 98% of the PS2 library. This guide covers the safe download, system requirements, and the settings that actually matter.

Download PCSX2 for Windows

Only download PCSX2 from the official project. Repackaged "installer" sites bundle adware — the real build is a clean portable archive or Qt installer.

First-Time Setup in 4 Steps

  1. Extract the portable build (or run the installer) and launch PCSX2 — the setup wizard opens automatically.
  2. Point the wizard at your BIOS folder. Don't have a BIOS dump yet? Follow the BIOS configuration guide first.
  3. Add your game directory so ISOs appear in the game list, and set the renderer to Vulkan under Settings → Graphics.
  4. Plug in a controller — PCSX2 auto-maps XInput pads, or see the controller mapping guide for DualShock and DualSense setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Windows version of AetherSX2?

No. AetherSX2 was Android-only and is discontinued. On Windows, PCSX2 is the actively developed PS2 emulator and outperforms any mobile port on desktop hardware.

What PC do I need for full-speed PS2 emulation?

A quad-core CPU with strong single-thread performance (Intel i5-8400 / Ryzen 5 2600 or newer) and any GPU with Vulkan support runs most games at 60 FPS. Demanding titles like Gran Turismo 4 benefit from an i5-10400 / Ryzen 5 3600 or better.

Is PCSX2 safe and legal to download?

PCSX2 is open-source software and completely legal. Emulation itself is lawful; you must supply a BIOS dumped from your own PS2 console and play backups of discs you own.

Should I use Vulkan or Direct3D 11 in PCSX2?

Use Vulkan on modern GPUs — it has the fewest graphical bugs and best performance in current PCSX2 builds. Fall back to Direct3D 11 only on older integrated graphics that lack solid Vulkan drivers.

Where do I put my BIOS file in PCSX2?

Place your dumped BIOS files in the 'bios' folder inside your PCSX2 documents directory, then select your region's BIOS in Settings → BIOS. See our BIOS configuration guide for the full dumping walkthrough.
