AetherSX2 for Android: Start with NetherSX2 in 2026
AetherSX2 made full-speed PS2 emulation on phones real — then its developer stepped away. The project lives on as NetherSX2, a clean community patch of the final build. This hub covers which version to install, what hardware you need, and how to tune it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is AetherSX2 still available for Android?
The original AetherSX2 was pulled from active development in 2023. The final builds still install, but the community-patched NetherSX2 build is the recommended version: it removes ads from the last release and continues to receive compatibility patches.
What phone do I need to run PS2 games on Android?
A Snapdragon 845 or newer runs lighter titles at full speed; a Snapdragon 855+ or better handles most of the library. Snapdragon chips with Adreno GPUs perform best because the Vulkan driver quality is highest.
Is NetherSX2 safe to install?
NetherSX2 is a binary patch applied to the final AetherSX2 APK, not a repackaged app from an unknown source. Build the patched APK yourself with the official patch tool, or verify the checksum of any prebuilt APK before installing.
Do I need a BIOS file for AetherSX2 or NetherSX2?
Yes. Both require a PS2 BIOS dumped from a console you own. The emulator will not boot games without it — see our BIOS configuration guide for the dumping process.
Why is my game slow even on a flagship phone?
Most slowdown comes from the default renderer or resolution being too ambitious. Switch to Vulkan, drop to 1x-2x resolution, and enable per-game underclocking only where our compatibility table recommends it.
