AetherSX2 alpha-654 APK Download
At 15 MB this is the smallest file on the page and the oldest thing we host — a build from the weeks when AetherSX2 first appeared and nobody yet knew it would reshape mobile emulation. It is a preservation artefact. Install it to see where this started, not to play anything.
This archive APK stays available for people who need this exact build. The pages Google should index for version choice are the older versions hub, the current v1.5-4248 download, and the Mali-friendly v1.5-3668 build.

Should You Use alpha-654? Real-World Notes
alpha-654 is one of the earliest public AetherSX2 builds anyone archived — from around the emulator's initial launch window in late 2021. Compared to modern builds it is dramatically leaner: fewer features, a different UI in places, and none of the accumulated compatibility fixes.
It is not the build you use to play games. It is the build you install if you care about the history of mobile PS2 emulation and want to see the project as it looked at the very start. On the same phone, the same game will look and behave noticeably different here compared to any 1.5-line release.
For serious play, use one of the newer builds on this page. For curiosity and preservation, alpha-654 is the earliest genuine snapshot we host.
What to Know Before Installing alpha-654
- The interface differs from every other build here in places. If a menu is not where you expect it, that is the build, not a fault.
- At 15 MB it is 5 MB smaller than the final release — an unusually visible illustration of how much the project accumulated over eighteen months.
- Expect most demanding games not to run at all. This predates essentially the entire compatibility effort.
Recommended Settings for alpha-654
| Renderer | Default — options here are limited by design |
|---|---|
| Resolution | Native (1x) |
- Approach it as preservation. The interesting thing is not the frame rate, it is seeing which parts of the emulator you take for granted did not exist yet.
- Try one well-known, undemanding title. It makes the comparison against a 1.5 build on the same phone genuinely striking.
- Do not spend time troubleshooting. Almost everything you might try to fix here was fixed later by moving to a newer build.
Installing alpha-654
A standard single-file APK: enable "Install unknown apps" for your browser or file manager, tap the download, and approve the install.
Coming down from a newer release: alpha-2230 or anything above it: means uninstalling that first, because Android refuses to install an older version over a newer one. Back up your memory cards before you uninstall. Those survive the move between builds; save states do not, so save inside the game rather than relying on a state you made on alpha-2230.
The rest of setup is the same for every AetherSX2 release, so we publish it once rather than repeating it here: see the illustrated 12-step install and BIOS walkthrough, or go straight to the PS2 BIOS guide if that is the part you are stuck on. Once the app boots, apply our baseline graphics tuning before raising upscaling.

Frequently Asked Questions
How old is alpha-654 exactly?
It comes from AetherSX2's initial launch window around late 2021, which is why it carries a date range rather than a single month — early builds circulated without the clean release records later versions have. It is the earliest genuine snapshot we host, and it predates the 1.0 release by roughly six months.
Why is it so much smaller than the other builds?
Because eighteen months of development had not happened yet. At 15 MB it is 5 MB smaller than the final 4248 release, and that gap is a fairly direct picture of what got added: graphics work, per-game handling, interface, and the accumulated fixes that make the later builds worth using. It is the clearest single illustration on this site of how much the project grew.
Will any games actually run on it?
Some, and undemanding ones. This build predates essentially the whole compatibility effort, so a title failing to boot is the expected outcome rather than a problem to solve. If you want to see the build do something, pick a well-known light game — and run the same game on a 1.5 build afterwards for the comparison, which is the genuinely interesting part.
