Battery capacity is not an EE core. A 6000 mAh Mali tablet can still miss 100% in God of War. Refresh rate (90/120 Hz) does not make PS2 output 120 FPS; it can add a frame of presentation delay. For pad play, 60 Hz is fine.

Internal resolution is a multiplier on the PS2's native framebuffer, not "1080p mode."

Final Fantasy X field maps at 2x on an 870 look finished. God of War at 3x on that same 870 does not — use the GoW profile (often 1x, EE −1). Keep Kingdom Hearts at 2x on an 870; 3x invents Gummi slowdown.
Do not buy a phone "for 4x." Buy it so 2x stays at 100% after twenty minutes in a case.
Flagship, sweet-spot, and budget tiers

Flagship (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 / 8 Gen 3 / 8 Elite class) Examples that actually shipped these chips: Galaxy S23/S24 Ultra (US Snapdragon SKUs), Xiaomi 13/14, OnePlus 11/12, ROG Phone 7/8. 3x native on most of the library, 4x on lighter RPGs, God of War playable with the GoW profile. Sweet spot (Snapdragon 870 / 7+ Gen 2 / 8+ Gen 1) POCO F3 / F4, Black Shark 4, many 2021–2023 "gaming" mid-flags. The value tier. 2x native, MTVU on, EE at 100% for RPGs. Heavy 3D may need 1x or EE −1. See 870 settings.
Playable budget (Snapdragon 778G / 7 Gen 1 / Dimensity 1200–1300) 1x–2x, OpenGL on many Mali parts, pick your games. FFX yes; GT4 no; Colossus only if you accept EE underclock and 1x.

Adreno versus Mali: renderer reality

Exynos in some Galaxy models follows the Mali story. Check the chip, not the series number.
RAM, storage, and cooling

6 GB works if you kill background apps. 8 GB is the comfortable floor for texture replacement (texture packs). 12 GB does not add EE clocks.
Store CHDs on internal UFS, not a Class 10 microSD. A 4 GB San Andreas ISO on SD is why "the game is slow only after the first city."
Gaming phones with vapor chambers help Colossus more than extra RGB. They still throttle in sun, in a thick case, or while charging. USB OTG pads beat Bluetooth for fighting games. A fan clip delays throttle; it does not turn an 870 into an 8 Gen 3.

- Foldables that report odd aspect ratios and then stretch HUDs (playable, annoying)
- School Chromebooks pretending to be phones (Chromebook is its own compromise)
- Anything that cannot install unknown-source APKs

Buying used: verify the SKU
Marketplace listings lie. Before you pay:
- Chip, not marketing name. EU "Galaxy S24" may be Exynos; US Unlocked S24 Ultra is Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Ask for Settings → About → Processor, or CPU-Z.
- RAM. 8 GB and 12 GB SKUs of the same model exist. 6 GB flagship-from-2020 is tighter than an 8 GB 870.
- Sideload. Some carrier units block unknown sources. If you cannot sideload, you cannot install AetherSX2.
- Battery. A used 870 with a dead battery throttles in power save and looks like a "slow emulator."
Do not buy a Helio G99 "gaming phone" for 120 Hz and a shoulder trigger. That is the budget Mali story with extra plastic.
