Final Fantasy X is one of the friendliest heavy RPGs on AetherSX2: lots of field maps and turn-based battles instead of God of War physics. It still punishes a wrong renderer during Zanarkand flashbacks and stretches pre-rendered FMV if widescreen is on without the FMV switch. Complete the APK and BIOS setup guide first so shrine saves land on a real memory card.

Match BIOS region to your dump. A PAL FFX on an NTSC BIOS can pitch-up the famous Hymn of the Fayth; details in PS2 BIOS regions.

## Dump, CRC, and which disc you need

International / PAL / NTSC-U copies are different CRCs. NTSC-U is commonly SLUS-20312; PAL SKUs sit in the SLES range. Per-game settings and .pnach widescreen files attach to that CRC. If you replace the ISO mid-playthrough, shrine saves still work; save states will not.

Most FFX releases are one disc. FFX-2 is a separate game list entry, not Disc 2 of FFX. Do not concatenate them into one CHD. Other PS2 Final Fantasy titles that are multi-disc need Disc 1–3 filenames.

CHD is recommended on phones (ISO to CHD). A 4 GB ISO on Class 10 microSD hitching only in Luca is often the card, not the renderer. A PAL dump on an NTSC BIOS pitches up the Hymn of the Fayth; that is 50 Hz firmware at 60, not a "PAL slow" bug.

Graphics settings that keep Spira at 100%

Start from best settings, then lock a per-game profile:

SettingMid-range (SD 870 / Dimensity 1200)Flagship (8 Gen 2/3)
RendererVulkan on Adreno, OpenGL on MaliVulkan
Resolution2x3x (4x if thermal headroom)
MTVUOnOn
EE cycle100%100%
Anisotropic4x8x

Software renderer is only for debugging a GS glitch. It will not play the Luca tournament at full speed.

If trees or water shimmer, try Disable Safe Features off (keep safety on) and lower anisotropic before you touch EE underclock.

Leave EE Cycle Rate at 100%. FFX is not Shadow of the Colossus. Underclocking to "make Blitzball smoother" desyncs Overdrive timings and makes Tidus's jumps feel late. If only Blitzball is slow, drop internal resolution for this CRC, not the EE.

Texture preload Full on 6 GB RAM plus Chrome in the background is how Luca hitches on an 870. Use Partial or Off, then close the browser.

Zanarkand flashbacks, Luca, and the Calm Lands

Three maps catch people who thought "FFX is easy on AetherSX2":

Zanarkand flashbacks / opening. Pre-rendered cameras plus 3D Tidus. Wrong renderer here looks like a broken dump: missing water, black squares, or a smear on the blitzball stadium lights. Swap Vulkan ↔ OpenGL once for this CRC before you re-rip the CHD. Keep MTVU on.

Luca. Crowds, the tournament FMV, then Blitzball's 3D pool. If field maps elsewhere are 100% and Luca is the only dip, treat it as a GPU + RAM spike: 2x, no extra GS dumps, no texture pack on first playthrough.

Calm Lands / Mt Gagazet snow. Large draw distance. 3x on an 870 will heat-throttle after ten minutes in a case; 2x holds. Flagship 8 Gen 3 can sit at 3x if you do not stack an HD texture pack on day one.

If Besaid is already 70% speed, the SoC is below the phone guide line. That is not an FFX pnach problem.

FMV, widescreen, and the 16:9 camera

FFX FMV aspect ratio

Enable built-in widescreen patches so 3D fields use a wider FOV, then turn on FMV aspect switch (sometimes labeled "Switch to 4:3 for FMV"). Pre-rendered videos stay 4:3; 3D stays wide. Without that switch, Tidus's intro dive looks crushed on a 20:9 phone. Manual .pnach steps: widescreen hacks.

Confirm CRC, enable the widescreen patch, enable FMV aspect switch, then boot. Skip to the first FMV, then walk a 3D field. If both look wrong, you stretched the whole display — use Auto / 4:3 host with the patch, not "fill screen." Interlace offset is for KH-style strobing, not FFX FMV stretch.

Saves, states, and long sessions

Use in-game shrines as truth. Keep one state for a tough aeon fight. After a NetherSX2 patch, boot FFX and save at a shrine before you rely on slots. A 4248 state from last month may not load after a patch; Mcd001.ps2 will.

A playthrough fills a shared 8 MB card fast if you also play KH on Slot 1. Use per-game cards, or delete old minigame saves. Do not format the card because a shrine is greyed out until you check Slot 1 path and region (saves hub).

Long sessions: 2x Vulkan on an 870 in a thick case will throttle in Zanarkand after ~20 minutes. Drop resolution or take the case off. That is heat, not a bad CHD.

Blitzball, Overdrives, and slowdown spots

Blitzball performance in AetherSX2
Blitzball performance in AetherSX2

Blitzball's 3D pool is heavier than most field maps. If speed drops only in the stadium, drop to 2x for that session, disable extra GS dumps, and close Chrome. Overdrive cut-ins are short; a one-second dip is not a broken dump. Persistent slow motion everywhere means the SoC is below the phone guide line.

Summon sequences add particle fill. If only the animation hitchs and the battle UI returns to 100%, leave settings alone. If the entire fight after an Overdrive stays at 80%, you raised internal res too far for this CRC.

Sphere Grid, analog, and the airship

The Sphere Grid is a 2D menu that still wants analog for cursor speed. A virtual stick with a huge dead zone makes node selection miserable; map a pad (controller setup) and hide touch controls.

The airship 3D map uses the left stick the same way field maps do. Analog on in Port 1. If the ship only inches, the pad is in keyboard/hat mode, not a "game bug."

Do not bind Android Back to Circle. You will close the overlay instead of cancelling a Sphere Grid move.

Lab notes: Zanarkand, Blitzball, FMV switch

NTSC-U FFX CHD on the POCO F3, Vulkan, 2x, MTVU on: field maps 100%. Luca Blitzball dropped to the high 80s until Chrome was force-stopped. FMV without FMV aspect switch stretched Tidus's intro dive on a 20:9 panel; enabling the switch restored 4:3 movies while 3D fields stayed on the widescreen pnach.

Known GS issues: PCSX2 wiki — Final Fantasy X. 60 FPS patches from PCSX2 Qt are not guaranteed on frozen Android 4248; if a pnach desyncs Overdrive timings, remove it. PAL FFX at 50 FPS with a matching BIOS is full speed. Android reports: r/EmulationOnAndroid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the HD remaster replace this?

The PC/NS/PS4 remaster is a different product. This page is the PS2 disc in AetherSX2, including original Blitzball physics.

Why is the PAL version slower?

PAL FFX targets 50 FPS at 100% speed. That is correct. NTSC is ~60. Do not "fix" PAL by forcing 60 without expecting pitch changes.

Can I use PC cheat engines?

No. Use .pnach on Android (cheats). Backup the card first.

Is FFX-2 settings the same?

Close, but a different CRC and a few heavier towns. Duplicate the FFX profile, then test 2x before 3x. Do not load an FFX shrine on the FFX-2 row.

Why is the opening FMV stretched but Besaid looks fine?

Widescreen patch is on and FMV aspect switch is off. Enable the switch; do not disable widescreen to "fix movies."

Should I underclock EE for Blitzball?

No. Drop internal resolution for this CRC. EE −1 is for Colossus and God of War, not Spira.
